We rescued Betty from the pound
in 2001. I didnt want a dog as I
recently had just lost my daughter
(she died at birth due to a birth
defect) Betty must have figured
I was one of those "Doggy
Mommies" & even though I acted
like I didnt like her or want her.
My Cousin 'insisted' that she was
the dog for our family. She was
only 2 - & in good health & had
the right temperament for our
home & family. My nephews are
both special needs. One has
Autism - the other - ADHD. Our
pets help them with their
conditions & in life.
When we brought Betty home, she
bolted from my cousin - ran
across the living room & jumped
right on top of me & licked my
face.
She wouldnt leave my side,
& "insisted" she stay with me for
the rest of the night - even
sleeping on my bed. Apparently I
was her "Doggy Mommy" - & I just
didnt know it until then. Once my
eyes caught hers - I was
completely taken in with her... &
the rest as they say - is
history. So.... that's how I
became the "Doggy Mommy" to
Betty the Australian Shepherd.
Since she "claimed" me as family,
we have gone from strength to
strength. Betty is great at
helping me manage a chronic
illness & knows when I am in pain.
Betty has a sweet, gentle
nature, is great with kids, is
good with other dogs, & loves
sleeping on her very own doggy
sofabed, right next to my bed. In
the winter she likes to be
covered up on her bed - as she
feels the cold. It's quite a
hoot to see. She also doesnt
like the light being on past 8pm
in the evening. She will sigh &
mumble to "tell me" to turn the
light off if I forget or she
can't get to sleep. - Or so she
says! Betty is a real sweetie. |
